Harvest tips for pears stored in modules

The main indicator for monitoring pear maturity is firmness. Before harvesting, it must be measured using a penetrometer with a 0.5cm² socket, on a representative sample of the orchard. The harvest firmness recommended for storage in CA modules varies from one variety to another, from 5.5 Kg / 0.5cm² for Comice to 8 Kg / 0.5cm² for William. The ideal storage temperature for pears varies from -1°C to 1°C depending on the variety, you can refer to the document available on this page. The recommended temperature must be reached in the heart of the pears before closing the AC lids. Rapid cooling after harvest is recommended to preserve the storage potential.
Do not store pears that are wet or show signs of disease.

Storage of pears in modules

Do not forget to add one bag of Captacal per module for CO2 sensitive varieties, to ensure a storage at less than 1% of CO2.
Avoid as much as possible temperature variations in the cold room during storage.
Regularly monitor gas levels during the stabilization period, and maintain spot monitoring during the rest of the storage period to identify any need for membrane surface adjustment. Avoid falling below 2% O2 to avoid internal browning.
Do not neglect the readaptation period after opening the lids.
